This is a pretty Canadian update

Anyone watch ReGenesis? Yes? No?

Well, I do. Season three just ended and I really want to talk about it. And by "it" I mean the finale and season three in general.

Season three was pretty amazing, I have to say. Unlike season two, it didn't lag in the middle -- probably because it remained consistent with the over-arching plot line, and also because the virus/disease/whatev of the week were a lot more interesting. I mean, spontaneous combustion? Nice.

Plus, season two was just confusing.

But what really made season three for me was Bob. And David. And their interactions. Don't get me wrong, I love Carlos and Mayko and Wes (especially Wes ♥) and even Rachel, but Bob has always been my favourite. There's just something about the character that is incredibly sweet, which serves as a nice foil to David's curmudgeon-y attitude. Plus, Dmitry Chepovetsky just has got the puppy-dog look down and in season three, it's been magnified by fancy blue-tinted glasses. He also looks great in sweater vests.

There's something about third seasons, something that inspires slash, because just as House's season three was heavy on the House/Wilson, ReGenesis' season three was heavy on David/Bob. It just seemed to me like each episode after 6 was subtextier than the last.

I may be biased, of course. It's possible to read David's obsession with Bob's vision as a mixture of guilt over the missed opportunity with his father, lingering grief over the explosion (and Caroline's death), and desperation to hang on to the few people who are still close to him. But where's the fun in that?

It's just the little things, like the casual way David said "we" when discussing the appointments with Turnbull (and damn if that name didn't make me think of due South every time I heard it), like it was a foregone conclusion that of course David would be with him every step of the way. Or there was the way he watched all three times Bob was operated on. Or the way he just... touched the little car on the chalk board in episode 12. Hell, pretty much every conversation they had in episode 11.

And there's the big things, too. The aforementioned obsession with Bob's vision, the solution he came up with when Turnbull's solution stalled, his constant reassurances that they would beat this.

And pretty much everything in episode 13. The way his voice cracked when Bob finally called him, the way he threatened Riddlemeyer and Roth, and then his expression when Roth hangs up. Just... the way he looks at the end, like a man who's just lost everything. Again. Poor David.

And that ending! Aside from the fact that Bob might be dead, this ending was pretty great. ReGenesis has this habit of establishing really cool, earth changing plots and then just... abandoning them (see: the gay gene, Wes' niece's virgin birth (a bacteria did that to her?), etc.) This scheme Roth's cooked up sounds like the beginnings of a pretty epic plot that could involve the entire planet. I'm not sure what they're planning on doing or how they're going to use Bob's stem cells to evolve the rest of humanity. Thank god there's going to be a season four. I just hope Bob will be in it.

Okay that's way too many words about Bob. Here are some words about season three that aren't about Bob.

  • Rachel. I love Rachel. I love that she's a mom and a sympathetic, level-headed Republican and just... cool. I was also kind of hoping she and Wes were hooking up, but I wasn't surprised to learn that they weren't. Still, they did spend a lot of time together, so who knows? Something may happen there.

  • Wes. I've loved Wes since season one, and I loved him even when he seemed evil in season two. I really loved him this season, with his fancy new hairstyle and his slightly casual but incredibly hot clothing.

  • Every time Wes and David exchange insults. This isn't limited to season three, of course, but it seemed more fun this season. Especially after Wes recovered from his LSD experience.

  • Mayko's therapist. He was attractive and amusing. Moving on.

  • Mayko. Mayko's character is a little uneven at times, and sometimes it seems like she's underused, but overall she's a strong, dynamic character. I liked her leg subplot.

  • Carlos' ex-wife. I should probably remember her name. Joanne? Anyway, she was fun and I was sort of hoping she'd stick around as a love interest. Even if I am an OTPer at heart, I really liked the way she and David interacted.

You know, I said I wanted to write more fandom-y stuff up in this journal, but I'm not sure I meant to write quite that much. Oh well.
